What is the "normal" way to calculate quarterly rates OR Prices. E.g. calculate the quarterly Oil Price, if I have the monthly data?

I suppose simply taking the average of the three months isn't the correct way, unfortunately I couldn't find a proper definition online.

Thanks in advance

$\begingroup$ There are lots of different methods depending on the purpose you are using the prices for and attributes of the data (like price volatility). In many situations the average price over three months or the third month's price would be an adequate approximation. $\endgroup$ – BKay Oct 31 '19 at 14:21
